In yet another evening of Tampa's metal music at The Orpheum, Cattle Decapitation was featured with 200 Stab Wounds, Blackbraid and Dark Funeral. With 30 years of Swedish dark metal, fans of Dark Funeral and Blackbraid were easy to spot, donning black and white face makeup. Meanwhile, people see names like 200 Stab Wounds and Cattle Decapitation with Dark Funeral, thinking it's some sort of animal sacrifice to a dark entity, leaving me to explain that they are bands, not live animal slaughtering.

Even Ted Talks has an edition titled "Extreme Healing: The Catharsis of Heavy Metal," which is just about enough proof as one might need to justify heading to see a metal show. It's not always about singing along to the lyrics, especially when half the people have no idea what might be being said. It's more about having an excuse to get out of the house, get a workout by moshing and dancing around, seeing some like-minded people who are up for doing the same thing, and having an outlet to forget about the everyday worries for a moment to be able to get lost in the music, as this is the type that will literally transport you to not only another time and place, but maybe even another dimension where spirits are tapped into.

When Blackbraid takes the stage, you almost feel that shift in the air that continues to linger as 200 Stab Wounds amps up the energy to an unruly measurement. When Cattle Decapitation takes the stage, you can nearly see the lead singer tap into the spirits, almost looking as if he is contorting with the possession of all those slaughtered animals. By the time Dark Funeral takes the stage, it's as if the black mass has been flowing the whole time, only becoming obvious as they seal the deal with spirits.
