Devildriver, Ill Nino, Cradle of Filth, Black Satellite, and Savage Existence
As soon as I walked in, I beelined to Logan Mader on stage. Of all the bands he is credited with, such as Soulfly, Machine Head, Five Finger Death Punch, Cavalera, Once Human and Gojira, amongst others), nobody ever seems to mention his working with Whitfield Crane of Ugly Kid Joe in a small project called Medication, which is where I first met him, when they were touring for the Prince Valium record. Those two taught me a card game that members of Pantera had taught to them, a bad way to spend the mortgage.

Has it been a couple decades now? Guess I'm showing our ages here. That was just before I got the opportunity to tour in Ozzfest in 2002, so we're going back a little ways here for sure.

Still, if you have not seen his latest project called Savage Existence, with a couple of Canadian musicians who now call Costa Rica home, you need to check it out. You might even know some of the Canadian rockers, as it was created by David Cleland (guitar) and Jesse Radford (drums) in 2020. Teaming up with Costa Ricans Andres Castro (lead guitar) and Daniel Ramos (bass), they topped off the group with a Russian musican cherry on top, lead singer Anton Darusso, so check them out at this link.

With the newbies on the tour being rockers from New York, Black Satellite held their own in a show full of classically great metal rockers. The lead singer was one of two girls who were on stage that night, the other being the keyboardist from Cradle of Filth, which is always cool to see girls rocking. However, this lead singer demanded attention with massive spikes threatening to pierce anyone who got too close to her shaved head sporting a fluffy mohawk that let people know she meant business.

The guys in the band were equally as decked out in metal fashion. They were slithering across the stage, making them more than fun to watch, as they commanded people to get into their music. All musical skills aside, what impressed me the most was their bass player walking around, handing out Halloween candy to just about everyone in the entire venue, with many not realizing he was on stage!

Don't ask me why I did not know that Ill Nino was going to be there. Probably because, like most people, I saw the dual headliners of Devildriver and Cradle of Filth duking it out on a poster, not even realizing there were going to be opening bands. People in the audience could be overhead, asking if there were more bands, confused, saying they thought there were only the two bands playing that night.

I mentioned Ozzfest 2002 earlier, and that's where I toured the country with Ill Nino. These guys have been bringing it for more than a couple decades now, and in all the times that I have seen them, I was shocked to see that they had additional drummers on this tour. Seeing how the founding member was their main drummer, I never thought he'd bring in backup, but as I have been big on the drum circles here in Florida, I was tickled pink to see the three drummers on a solo mission of drumming.

I loved that they brought in different types of percussion, and in my opinion, it really kicked their sounds up a notch from when I had seen them in the past. It's not just show drummers that are adding flash and trash, but these guys are legit, pounding away til the sweat beads down their faces. Adding that tribal element just elevates the entire sound, so if it's been a while since you saw them, be sure to check them out in their latest form, as you will not be disappointed if you've been a longtime fan.

Ah, Dez, he's still got it. You might remember him from a band called Coal Chamber, which is the band he was in when I first interviewed him, when I remember him telling me about nursing a crow back to health when they were playing with Drowning Pool before Dave Williams died (and he wound up dying on that Ozzfest 2002 tour by the way). Now, he's fronting Devildriver, as he's been for a while, and behind the scenes, he's managing bands like Savage Existence and lots more stuff.

It's not his tattoos but his eyes that have always drawn me in, and I think other audience members often get hypnotized into his music from his pale eyes that lurk of danger, like Crystal Lake where Jason might as well be popping out of from Friday the 13th, and speaking of which, that was the day of the show. His music is as catchy as ever, and the musicians he has compiled are top notch, ensuring that you will be motivated to slosh around in the mosh pit, sliming across other sweaty bodies for fun.

Cradle of Filth is the band I first interviewed out of all the bands, and that was back in 2001, before either of us were on Ozzfest, as Cradle of Filth toured in 2003. Speaking of Ozzfest alumni, does anyone realize how many times Dez was on Ozzfest? Being there the first three years of the tour with Coal Chamber in 1996, 1997, and 1998, he rejoined with Devildriver in 2004, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2016, which almost makes him tied with Black Label Society, who played nine years there.
Cradle of Filth es la banda a la que entrevisté por primera vez entre todas las bandas, y eso fue en 2001, antes de que ninguno de nosotros estuviera en el Ozzfest, cuando Cradle of Filth estuvo de gira en 2003. What I recall about my very first interview with Dani Filth of Cradle of Filth was him telling me about their involvement making horror videos. It's funny, as I have always been into horror, and while I have a number of horror books that I've written, I just now finally got around to filming my first horror film. It's almost like a full circle moment, as I remember quizzing him up about it that long ago, and am just now getting around to making it a reality for myself, so thank you Dani for those words so long ago!

Now, what I recall from Cradle of Filth on Ozzfest was something that blew my mind back then, and I was hoping that they'd have on this tour, but as soon as I saw the stage, I knew it might not be possible. Forget about P!nk doing it, as these guys did the whole aerial performing way before she did. I have always loved aerial arts, so major props for doing it way back then, and my only complaint is that I wish the stage would've been high enough for them to be able to do that type of stuff on this tour.
Ahora, lo que recuerdo de Cradle of Filth en Ozzfest fue algo que me dejó alucinado en aquel entonces, y esperaba que lo hicieran en esta gira, pero tan pronto como vi el escenario, supe que tal vez no fuera posible. Again, I love that Cradle of Filth has a long history of including females into their performances, be it an aerial artist, a keyboardist, backup vocals or whatever else. They try to make sure that all of your sense are stimulated when they perform, making them a band that is always worth seeing live. I remember Megadeth's Dave Ellefson saying how European music is more symphonic than American music, and Cradle of Filth has that sort of influence that you can pick up on, making it musically tantalizing, not just repetitive call backs that are brainless like some other bands I can think of out there.
Una vez más, me encanta que Cradle of Filth tenga una larga historia de incluir mujeres en sus actuaciones, ya sea artista aérea, tecladista, coros o cualquier otra cosa. Intentan asegurarse de que todos tus sentidos se estimulen cuando actúan, lo que los convierte en una banda que siempre vale la pena ver en vivo.
